The Dr. Edith Farnsworth House

This famous steel and glass structure, designed by Mies van der Rohe,  was built from 1946 to 1950 and has been privately owned since then.  The building is only yards away from the banks of the Fox River near Plano, Illinois--about 60 miles southwest of Chicago.  Being in a flood plain, it was inevitable that,  because the Fox River  occasionally overflows its banks, the house would be at risk for severe flood damage.  Twice in the past the house was inundated - once in 1954 and then again in 1996.  After the last flood the house was very severely damaged and was subsequently restored.  The restoration that had to be done cost over a millions dollars.  Right now, there is no emergency plan in place to protect the building in case of another flood, and it is unlikely that a private owner could bear the cost of protection, or another restoration if the building were damaged by another flood.
To find out more about this house and this story, you can look on the internet.  There are a few good web sites featuring the building and its history.
