Re:BUILDING

A Preservation Newsletter

Volume 16 - July 7, 2003

Hi All,

There is always a silver lining. Sometimes, one just has to  look a little harder to find it.  At least the Wack house "relics" are being recycled and not ending up in landfill somewhere.  It is intriguing to speculate into the future and wonder if the inhabitants of the next house created from this stone will ever know of its previous life.

Are the Women of the River Forest Women's Club being seduced by their Village to turn over their building, only to then watch it be demolished in the name of community development and "efficient land use"?

Two rare Griffin designed homes are lost, but a mass-produced Lustron house is moved from its lot and saved.  A Rapp and Rapp structure may be lost, but the sacrifice may turn out to benefit the preservation of other, more important structures and help preserve an important landscape.

And a structure, Saint James Chapel, that not too many years ago was under threat,  is now having its priceless stained glass windows restored.

This months Re:BUILDING guest contributor:  An interesting and useful article on, what else, painting, by friend and guru, Bob Kieca.  Bob knows how to cut to right the heart of a matter.  Here he talks about planning.  Thanks again, Bob!

A restoration tip by Yours Truly, on finding salvaged tile.

P.S. If someone sees anybody demolishing an old bathroom (ca. 1900 -1920s) let us know - especially if it is in the Chicago area.  Looking for old 2 inch hex floor tiles and old subway wall tiles.
