I have a background in the arts as a classically trained violinist. A student of Milton Preves and Adia Ghertovici, I received my Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance in 1979 from DePaul University. While at DePaul, I also studied composition, and electronic music composition with Raymond Wilding-White. In a now obsolete genre (that was before computers!), I composed many electronic compositions for tape as soundtracks for young avant garde filmmakers, some of which were shown at regional film festivals and on public television in the late 1970s and early 1980s. I then did two years of graduate studies at the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University and the American Conservatory of Music in Violin Pedagogy and orchestral repertoire, until the death of my teacher and mentor, Adia Ghertovici. I have performed as a soloist and as a section player with many orchestras and ensembles throughout the Chicago area for over 25 years. I am active as a chamber musician and recitalist. I served as concertmaster of the Lake Shore Symphony of Chicago for 10 concert seasons. My other symphony engagements include the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, the Northwest Indiana Symphony, the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, Light Opera Works, the Elgin Symphony, the Lake Forest Symphony and the Rockford Symphony. During that time, I have also taught violin privately for over 20 years and now teach young intermediate, advanced students and adults. I now teach in the Oak Park area, and take students throughout the Chicago metropolitan region. I can be reached by e-mail at: MartyHacklViolin@re-building.com |
